For context: winter-heated homes often sit at 20–30% RH, which is why leaf edges crisp up in January even when your watering hasn’t changed. Summer homes usually hover in the comfortable 40–60% band on their own.
Measure before you meddle
Guessing humidity is like guessing soil moisture — you’ll be wrong half the time. A basic digital hygrometer costs a few dollars; put one on the plant shelf, not across the room, because humidity varies surprisingly across a single home. Bathrooms and kitchens run humid; rooms with radiators or forced-air vents run dry.
Signs your air is too dry: brown, crispy leaf tips and edges, curling leaves on calathea and ferns, buds dropping before opening, and spider mites thriving — dry air is their favourite weather (see spider mites on houseplants). How to raise humidity (what works, what doesn’t)
- Group plants together. Each plant transpires; a cluster creates its own slightly-more-humid microclimate. Free and effective.
- Pebble trays. A tray of water and pebbles under the pot (pot sitting on the pebbles, above the waterline) adds gentle local humidity as it evaporates. Modest but real effect right at leaf level.
- A humidifier. The only method that reliably moves a whole room from 30% to 50%+. Run a cool-mist unit near the plants and refill it as routinely as you water.
- Room choice. Bathrooms with a window suit ferns and calathea beautifully.
- Misting? Honest answer: it raises humidity for a few minutes, then it’s gone. Fine as a ritual, useless as a strategy — and wet foliage that stays wet invites fungal spots.
Too much humidity is a disease problem
Above roughly 60–70% RH — especially with still air — you enter fungal territory. Powdery mildew, botrytis (grey mould), downy mildew and leaf spot all spike when air is humid and stagnant, and consistently damp soil in humid rooms accelerates root rot. If you run a humidifier, pair it with airflow: space plants out, run a small fan on low, and keep humidity in range rather than maxed.
